Volunteer at Central Park Zoo Attacked by Ailing Tiger

A college student volunteering as a Veterinary Assistant was brutally attacked yesterday when one of the animals, a male Bengal tiger named 'Rajah,' refused to cooperate with handlers who were attempting to sedate and quarantine him for treatment.

The 20-year-old volunteer, Caitlin Kieran, suffered serious injuries after one of the handlers failed to properly administer a tranquilizer and the tiger broke free of his restraints. Emergency personnel transferred Ms. Kieran to Metropolitan Hospital following on-site trauma care.

'Rajah' was immediately tranquilized and treated for unspecified injuries sustained in the attack. He remains under quarantine, pending a review by the Board of Directors for the CPZ.

The handler who improperly administered the original tranquilizer has not been identified, and no charges have been filed.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. in an enclosure that was not open to the public, and representatives from the Central Park Zoo Administration have issued a statement assuring zoo-goers that there is no danger of any of the animals escaping from their habitats.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Caitlin and her family," adds resident CPZ Veterinary Specialist, Dr. William Ford.
