Name: Brittany Amanda Brown
Occupation: Political Advocate, Speaker.
Legal Status: American citizen with no criminal record.
Location: San Francisco, CA.
Identity: Public.
Nova Name: Liberteen (Nov 2005- Jul 2007), Libertyne (Jul 2007-Current)
Place of Birth: Norfolk, VA
Age: 19
Eruption: Unknown.

Height: 1.6 meters
Weight: 61.2 kilograms
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blond
Distinguishing Marks: n/a

Approximate Power Level: Measurements at eruption put Libertyne in the middle 30% of recent eruptees (2006-Present) in terms of versatility. Current estimations place her in the upper twentieth percentile of flight-capable novas and amongst the top twenty publicy-known novas who possess enhanced social characteristics.

Known Quantum Powers: Brittany was capable of supersonic flight at the time of her eruption, and possesses quantum-enhanced physical beauty and social charm. [1] Although not made apparent until some time after her voluntary dismissal from the Seattle, WA Rashoud Clinic, it’s been found that she is also capable of channeling raw kinetic energy through her hands, which she has typically used as a form of kinetic bull rush to knock back aggressors. [2] Speculation abounds that Libertyne also possesses a form of synergistic emotional backlash, causing those near her to feel whatever she herself is feeling. [3]

Libertyne has scored off baseline IQ scales and is known widely for her prodigious physical and social grace.

Abilities/Special Skills: An accomplished polyglot, Libertyne’s chief calling seems to be that of pundit and iconoclast. A gifted public speaker, her primary advantage is her gentle nature and diplomatic skills. For these reasons as well as others, she has been favorably compared to Project Utopia’s ’Geisha’ by many public figures who have worked with her. A prolific writer, Miss Brown has shown some affinity both for her numerous social treatises [4] and her recent interest into political cartooning. [5]

Weapons Used:An avowed pacifist [6], Libertyne has only been publicly known to get into one physical conflict, in which she used the kinetic blasts from her hands to subdue and eventually kill her opponent, a nova serial killer known only as Cyn [7]. At no other time has she been known to carry or use a weapon, and maintains that conflicts should be settled nonviolently, whenever possible.

Appearance and Personality: Brittany Brown is a perky young lady in her late teens who is frequently described as having a look that is “All-American” [8] or “Girl Next-Door” [9]. She possesses a thin, athletic frame topped by long, blond hair, and has pale skin that tans well, and is dotted with freckles. In March 2008, she came in number three on N! Newsmagazine’s ‘Top 10 Perfect 10 Novas’ behind Ausrine Vasiliauskiute and frequent favorite Alejandra. [10] She is most frequently seen in her personal Eufibre Colony, which she typically wears in the form of a form-fitting, rather revealing white bustier with red piping, coupled with knee- and elbow-length boots and gloves, a blue half-cape, and blue skirt, which she is well known to wear without anything underneath, so much so that it has become the subject of both a popular OpNet blog [11] and a heated legislative issue [12]. As her primary mode of travel is by quantum flight, she is frequently seen with a pair of Korean War-era flight goggles that she wears on her crown when not in flight.

In person, Brittany is known for her sterling charm and grace, coupled with a genteel but solid intellect. She seems genuinely fond of everyone she meets, and has a kind word for nearly everyone. She is intellectually brave, part of which, she claims, is “knowing when you’re wrong and being bold enough to admit it, without defense, without pretense” [13], and is a formidable debater. Despite her somewhat infamous personality, she has had pleasant meetings with several members of the American political and intellectual elite, including President Randolph Portman, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and noted columnist Christopher Hitchens, the former of which described her as “a fine young lady.” [14] Aside from her political and diplomatic savvy, Libertyne is also known for her very public sexuality, and was called ‘America’s Smartest Sex Symbol’ by Novaphile Magazine.

Early Life
-----------------------------------------------------------

Brittany was born to Lt. Col. Douglas Brown (ret.) and Lt. Carol Brown (ret.) at Norfolk Naval Base in Norfolk, VA on 4 July, 1988. She was raised on base until the age of nine. Speaking on her childhood, she told N!TV “I really loved being a military brat. Plus, my birthday’s on the fourth of July, so every year, there were fireworks on base on my birthday, and for a little girl, that’s just awesome! I think it was a combination of that, the fact that I was living around soldiers all the time, and the fact that both my parents are in the service that so heavily influenced my sense of patriotism, even as a young girl.” [15]

In 1997, both of her parents retired from active duty and moved the family to a small ranch home outside Missoula, Montana, where her father opened up a sporting goods store. There, Brown attended Missoula High School and was active in cheerleading, chess club, debate club, soccer, lacrosse, drama club, and several political extracurricular activities, among them the Gay-Straight Alliance, 4H, Girls Scouts of America, and The Brights. She remains a member in good standing with these organizations.

Eruption
(See Main Article: Eruption)
-----------------------------------------------------------

Little is known about Brittany’s eruption, and she has been uncharacteristically not forthcoming with details about the incident. What is known is that on October 31, 2005, Brittany’s father heard a loud noise come from his daughter’s bedroom. Not knowing what to think, he checked in on her and found her on her passed out on her bedroom floor. The Missoula Police Department official report indicated no signs of entry, no signs of struggle, and no signs of foul play. Not knowing what to do, Mr. Brown carried his daughter into the family station wagon and took her to the Missoula Regional Hospital emergency room, where a test confirmed quantum activity. From there, Brittany, who was still unconscious, was taken by helicopter to the nearest available Rashoud Clinic, in Seattle, WA. After being administered a low dosage of Moxinoquantamine inhibitor, she eventually regained consciousness. After three days of testing and monitoring, she was discharged in perfect health. [16]

Activism
-----------------------------------------------------------

Shortly after her eruption, Brittany was featured on the N! Network’s ’Fresh Faces’ half-hour weekly program. It was here that she first announced her intended nova handle and her intentions for erupted life. [17] Within the two months that followed, she had allied herself with the American Civil Liberties Union, the Queer Nova Alliance, and Planned Parenthood, and currently serves as occasional spokesperson to all three organizations.

Libertyne’s politics have swayed heavily in favor of both American Socialism and Libertarianism, depending on the issue. She refers to herself as “an active Centrist”, and had said that sectarian politics take attention away from issues more important than “my team versus your team”. [18]

Also very active in social issues, Brittany has been outspoken on several heavy social issues, in which she appears to have an extremely liberal stance. Her social views on individual liberties are Libertarian in the extreme, and she maintains her advocacy of the legalization of drugs and prostitution, lowering of the age of consent, equality for the GLBT community, and unrestricted access to pregnancy termination.

Political Controversy
-----------------------------------------------------------

Libertyne has come under heavy fire from both Conservative and Liberal political groups for her views. Known for being extremely critical of elected officials, bipartisan politics, and beltway insiders, she has drawn the ire of many Washington insiders. While advocating licensing for firearms, she does not support the assault weapons ban. While advocating a tremendous luxury tax to support a system of universal health care, she does not support the income tax or the Federal Reserve. She supports both the unrestricted legalization of even dangerous narcotics and prostitution at the same time as capital punishment and the military, homosexual marriage at the same time as standing militias. Despite this, few have dared to call her patriotism into question, and her public image is that of a devoted and loyal (albeit revolutionary) American citizen.

New York v. Brown
(See Main Article: New York v. Brown)

In late 2006, Brittany was arrested in New York City, NY, on charges of misdemeanor public indecency, after making a landing near Central Park. She was booked and then released on her own recognizance. Brown was represented by ACLU attorney Johann Fisk, who appealed the case several times. In February 2007, the case was taken to New York Supreme Court, where it was appealed again on the argument that an individual nova in flight was not within the jurisdiction of the United States above a certain altitude, as there was, at the time, no international agreement on the vertical extent of sovereign airspace. By this argument, a nova in flight was effectively in “international air” until such a time as they landed, at which point there was no longer any exposure to speak of. Fisk further argued that as a public figure and advocate of sexual freedoms, Miss Brown’s refusal to wear anything under her skirt was in accordance with her First Amendment rights to free political expression in keeping with her past advocacy of overturning public indecency laws, and therefore, arresting her on those grounds was in violation of the Constitution.

In a landmark 6-2 decision (Justice Clarence Thomas declining), it was decided that Miss Brown was within her Constitutional rights to not wear anything underneath her skirt while in flight or landing, but only when publicly traveling under her nova persona. It was further decided that the official vertical boundary of sovereign air space would follow the Kármán Line, an altitude of 100km, within the continental United States.

Repercussions of this decision have been felt far and wide. The Supreme Court’s ruling to finally put a boundary on the vertical boundary of American sovereignty has met little controversy, though many have speculated that the motion was motivated by a combination of decency and morality statutes and a desire to preserve the integrity of restricted airspace.

Sexual Controversy
-----------------------------------------------------------

Of equal controversy is Brown’s outspoken stance on sexuality. A self-professed pansexual, Libertyne has admitted to practicing “pretty much every kink that isn’t against the law”. [19] While generally demurring when pressed for details, in April 2007 she was asked, in an interview with Jordan McDevitt, point-blank if her sexuality extended to the animal kingdom. She replied, “I’d never advocate animal abuse. Which is weird, because I’m not above eating meat, or hunting, and not a lot of people have a problem with you butchering animals to devour their flesh, but those same people will call you a monster if you fellate a horse. Nobody finds that odd, which is what I find oddest of all. The common argument made by people who pity or claim to understand zoophiles is that ‘animals can’t consent’. And that’s true, in the sense that they don’t possess sentience and couldn’t speak even if they did, but anyone who’s raised an animal can tell you that they can certainly register protest. Furthermore, pigs don’t ‘consent’ to become bacon, but we have no moral qualms about that.” McDevitt then rebuffed her, asking her whether she was going to answer the question or simply dissemble. Miss Brown smiled and said “I believe I just did answer your question, Jordan.” [20]

Additionally, Libertyne has spoken openly about her support for the GLBT community, and has strongly stated that all American health care should cover sexual reassignment. She has called for a national decriminalization of bestiality and incest laws, citing that the laws concerning animal and child abuse must be adequately enhanced to grievously punish child molesters and animal abusers without restricting the sexual lives of consenting adults. [21] Her current initiative, which she is attempting to get on the California state ticket through talks with Gov. Arnold Schwarznegger, would reduce the age of consent in the state of California to 15 with the restriction that those engaging in congress be no more than four years apart, and 17 with no restrictions. If this measure passes, she hopes to extend it to other states, possibly even extending the measure to establish a national age of consent.

In spite of her iconoclasm, Miss Brown has not been formally expelled from any of the institutions she claims membership in. A January 2008 expose on Libertyne in The New York Post attacked both the Girls Scouts of America and 4H for having not publicly denounced Miss Brown’s actions and excused her from the organization. A representative from 4H replied in a letter to The Post, “Miss Brown is a member of our organization in good standing, and has been since 1996. Nothing she has done violates the 4H pledge or terms of conduct.” [22] Later, a representative for the Girl Scouts of America went even further, responding, “We are delighted and proud to count a nova as a member of our organization. Miss Brown has been a recipient of the Gold Star Award and has been an exemplary Scout for the entirety of her time with our organization. She is a fine example of a Scout and a fine ambassador for Scouting, and we feel that she embodies our core virtues of developing ones full potential; relating to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; developing a meaningful set of values to guide their actions and to provide for sound decision-making; and contributing to the improvement of society. We wish her only the best in her continued endeavors and hope that she remains with us for many years to come.” [23] Miss Brown has stated in the past that she’s pleased to see the GSA’s progressive views “aren’t built on sand”, and has expressed happiness at being a member. [24] In 2007, Brown attended the National GSA Jamboree, opting to leave her Eufibre at home for duration of the gathering, opting instead for her proper scout uniform. [25]

Religious Controversy
-----------------------------------------------------------

In addition to crossing swords with traditional politics and traditional morality, Libertyne has been very vocal in her criticism of religious beliefs, as well. While maintaining a cautious, provisional acceptance of the religious beliefs of others, she has stated on several occasions that she does not believe in any sort of personal god, and has expressed a dislike for religion as a phenomenon. As in all matters, she is very diplomatic, never condescending, and has said on the matter, “I’d be happy to sit down and discuss someone’s religious beliefs with them. As long as your fist doesn’t reach my nose, I have no problem with people believing whatever makes them happy, even if I disagree with you. It’s when people start hurting other people because of these beliefs that I have a problem with the religion of other people, and it seems to me that religion breeds that impulse, to twist good people to evil purposes. I sincerely believe that people want to be good, I do. These people who believe in God, Allah, the majority of them are doing what they sincerely believe is right. But I’m sorry, killing people in the name of faith, denying people basic human rights, there is no virtue in this. It’s not right. So no, I don’t believe in any god. If you can believe in something supernatural or divine and have it not cloud your rational thinking or cause harm to others, more power to you.” [24]

Clash with Focus on the Family

On April 2, 2007, Libertyne was posted as the Focus on the Family OpSite as the Featured Article under their ‘Social issues’ section. Citing her victories in the social and political arenas, her high popularity, and her association with groups like Planned Parenthood and the Brights, as well as her continued membership in the Girl Scouts of America and 4H, Brittany was named ‘Family Threat Number One’. This started the grassroots evangelical ‘One True Liberator’ campaign to boycott Libertyne and those groups associated with her, accompanied by letter-writing campaigns, picketing of her public speaking events, and designated prayer days. Dr. James Dobson, President of Focus on the Family, wrote: “This vile temptress embodies all the worst aspects of the Godless, liberal society we find ourselves in. She is leading our children astray with her appeals to perverse lust, Godlessness, and liberalism, and in the name of Our Heavenly Father, it must stop. Together, brothers and sisters, we can put an end to this misguided young woman’s hold over our families, our children, our society, and our homes, in Jesus’ name, and bring her into the light. Amen.” The Focus on the Family website offers a pamphlet on the ‘One True Liberator’ campaign for a modest, tax-deductible donation of fifty dollars USD. [25]

As of this time, the One True Liberator campaign is still a part of the FOTF program, and representatives from the organization have spoken out against Miss Brown at every turn, claiming a large share of society’s ills on the professed perversion she spreads. Libertyne has declined to comment on the campaign, stating that she “wouldn’t want to offer them legitimacy by entering the arena with them. This is a free country, thankfully, and they are free to do and say as they wish.” [26]

Name Change
-----------------------------------------------------------

On July 16, 2007, after being discharged from Temple University Hospital, Brittany – at the time, known as ‘LiberTeen’ – called a press conference outside Liberty Hall, in Philadelphia. Among the issues addressed were her feelings regarding the Cyn debacle and her announcement that she’d be relocating to a larger, more cosmopolitan area. Of significant note was her announcement that, having recently turned nineteen, she would be dispensing with the “teen” portion of her nova handle in order to embrace her adulthood. She clarified that though her name would not actually be changing either in sound or in function, the spelling would reflect a new attitude, and accordingly, she revealed this new name, ‘Libertyne’, to the crowd.

Since the change, it has become common to see Libertyne’s name misspelled in accordance with her old moniker. Though both are considered to be accurate, the general understanding seems to be that ‘LiberTeen’ refers to her more unfocused, party-girl persona and ‘Libertyne’ her more serious, advocacy persona. They are also known as simple her “pre-Cyn title” and “post-Cyn title”. [27]

Cyn
(See Main Article: Cyn)
(See Main Article: Oak House Room Massacre)
-----------------------------------------------------------

While giving a speech at American University on April 4, 2007, Libertyne was unexpectedly drawn into the pursuit of a terrorist nova calling herself ‘Cyn’, who had murdered Professor Antonio Fuerta in his office at the college. Capable of flight, discorporeality, and enhanced attack skills, Libertyne was asked to join the pursuit by sky until nova law enforcement could arrive. What followed was a brief exchange of words between the two young women, before Cyn vanished inside one of the campus buildings and evaded capture. [28]

Details concerning the interaction between Cyn and Libertyne over the next several months is a matter of some dispute, as the only accounting of these events come from Libertyne herself, who claims that on the evening of April 20, 2007, Cyn entered Libertyne’s family home, threatened Mr. and Mrs. Brown, and then sexually molested Ms. Brown while invisible before revealing herself, taunting and threatening Libertyne, and disappearing into the night. [29]

Cyn’s next appearance was on June 3, 2007, when she arrived at Pittsburgh’s Oak House Room where, in absentia of trained law enforcement personnel on site, she subsequently murdered thirty-six of the approximately eighty people inside the club. The massacre garnered national news coverage, and brought Cyn – and by extension, Libertyne – back onto the national stage.

Private correspondence that has since been made public arrived at Libertyne’s Montana home on July 1, 2007. The letter, written by Cyn, who was still at large, indicated that she meant to cause any even greater slaughter on July 4th in Philadelphia if Libertyne did not arrive at an appointed place and time detailed in the letter. Not wanting to cause any further bloodshed and unsure as to whether or not Cyn was watching her actions to see if she shared the information, Brittany opted to meet Cyn in front of Liberty Hall early in the morning of July 4, as instructed. After speaking briefly, Cyn fled the scene, killing a nearby police officer and three civilians. Libertyne gave chase as police and news arrived on the scene, presumably summoned by Cyn, who had hoped to publicly execute Ms. Brown. Despite taking a fearsome beating during the course of the battle, Libertyne managed to corner Cyn after having taken refuge in an occupied school bus, using the children as human shields from both Libertyne and attending law enforcement. Video taken at the scene confirms that at that time, Libertyne forced her way into the bus, shouted something inaudible at Cyn, who cringed, giving Libertyne the opening to attack, subsequently beating Cyn to death.

After the battle, Libertyne was taken by ambulance to Temple University Hospital, where she was treated for multiple fractures, concussion, minor lacerations, and light internal bleeding. During her stay in the Philadelphia hospital, she was visited and commended by new Philadelphia city Mayor Michael Nutter and Police Chief Leo Bruno, who awarded her the Citizen’s Service Medal for her service to the city of Philadelphia.

In light of what happened with Cyn, Libertyne claimed to realize what risk she was putting her family at simply by sharing a home with them, and relocated to an apartment in San Francisco, California, where she lives still. [30]

Public Image
-----------------------------------------------------------

Few novas can boast such rapid and erratic shifts and surges in popularity as Libertyne, especially over a career as short as hers has been thus far. Initially embraced by Middle American demographics for her clean, friendly, girl-next-door demeanor, she quickly ran at odds with this group with her rather vocal pronouncements of her political, religious, and sexual agendas. Six months after her eruption, her popularity was at an all-time low, having been abandoned by the bulk of her initial fan base. It was a few months later when she finally started to gain acceptance in the subcultures she felt she was a part of, but once the process began, it happened with startling speed. Catalyzed largely by the New York v. Brown decision in her favor and the very public Focus on the Family campaign against her, she was quickly embraced as simultaneously an iconoclast darling and a patriotic home-town girl. Quirkily, the publicity brought to her over the Cyn episode has garnered her still more fans; combined with her aggressive social maneuvering, good looks, and charm, Libertyne has parlayed for herself a rather modest degree of both national and international fame, as well as political clout.

A creature of magnificent beauty and grace, Libertyne is known publicly as being soft-spoken, sweet, and genteel, while intellectually open and aggressive. She has participated and won several well-publicized debates, frequently striking her opponents dumb in the arena of rhetorical combat only after they’ve written her off as just another pretty face. Despite her brazen outlook on sexuality, Libertyne has kept her personal relationships rather private, citing that “being public about my views on sexuality doesn’t mean that the press gets to know who I’m with, or when”. [31] She is, nevertheless, a well-known flirt who seems to exult in exhibitionism.

Libertyne represents a strange dichotomy in the world of social reform, being an American iconoclast who manages to practice her own rhetoric and still appeal just as well to Democrats as Republicans, to be taken seriously at Senate meetings as well as at Lollapalooza. In this regard, she has frequently and stubbornly been christened by several OpNet bloggers as “the 21st century’s Voltaire”, though Brown insists that such a title is far more aggrandizing than she deserves. [32]

Tributes and Portrayals
-----------------------------------------------------------

  • Appeared on the February 16, 2008 episode of Family Guy as an off-camera gag made by the character Peter Griffin, who remarked “This is just like the time I met Libertyne!” before the camera cut away to a frame of the character looking up and saying “Aweeeeeesooooome.”
  • The ‘LiberTeen’ Halloween costume, distributed by Noveax Unltd. can be purchased at most retail outlets or online. It has a recommended age range of 12 and up.
  • Pastiches of Libertyne's costume and avowed proclivities have made her the subject of both parody and praise in several adult and men's magazines, among them MAXIM, Playboy, Barely Legal, and Novaphile Magazine.
