I got a letter with no return address today. It was post marked from L.A. it warned me that some people in positions of power where beginning to believe I may be making a "India Syndrome" situation in America's heartland. I am honestly a little worried at what this implies. Is this letter just a crank trying to scare me or should I take this seriously?

I don't want the Directive to think I am setting up my own religion out here. I realize that my situation among my people is unique but I don't want federal agents storming onto the reservation and resulting in a Waco or another Wounded Knee of Nova level proportions.

I need some help on this one, seriously.

Totem, you are a federal citizen of the United States of America. Contact the ACLU if you think you are going to have any problems. You have rights. Use them. They can only take those freedoms away from you if you let them.

On the positive side, you might want to contact the Interior department for a liason, and the FBI so you and the Tribal Council can brief them on your activities during the celebration. Be inclusive, and things should work out alot better.

Most conflicts are the result of mis-understandings and misconceptions. Meet the other guy half way.

This is just odd.

I know for a fact Totem isn't trying to develop some sort of cult around himself. He's just trying to live his everyday life. So, what does someone do? Threaten him.

There needs to be some extra security now at the festival. Although I don't like the idea...

I'd take it seriously Totem my man. At least 'till you get proof it's a hoax. I had a problem like this a while back. Don't panic big guy, it can be worked out, but take the warning seriously.

I have very little of substance to add. I agree completely with Mr. Preston, and Brother X has a good point as well.

There is not all that much difference between the Indian concept of 'gods' and the Native American concept of 'spirits', so you leave yourself open to that form of attack as long as your Tribe calls you a spirit. You may want to look into shifting your image more towards that of a shaman, so you have a firmer defense against that form of slander. Good luck with your festival.

I am looking into getting a lawyer now. Luckily Lawyers love to get a Nova client since they are high publicity.

I am going to try stop this now before anything else comes about because of it. I am contacting the BIAs office here on the res to talk about this. I am not going to endanger my people simply because they believe in me.

Take the letter very seriously. But I do not recommend giving into threats.

You will most likely be unable to prevent your people from worshiping you, even if you tell them not to do so. But that is exactly what you must do unless you are prepared to handle the responsibility that this entails. Their belief alone is enough to make certain authorities very uncomfortable. Be careful young one. Be vigilant.
