Name: Sandcaster
Real Name: Anne Marie Vincenne
Gender: Female
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 115 lbs.
Age: DOB 2/29/1972
Character Sheet Appearance: Sandcaster is a slightly built woman with a longish face. She is blonde, with deep blue eyes behind glasses. She maintains a neat and groomed appearance, and usually wears clothing that, while practical, appears at least somewhat professional; she is not of the "jeans and T-shirt" crowd.
Known powers: Sandcaster has demonstrated an assortment of sand-based powers. She can emit a focused jet of sand that acts much as a sandblaster; she can create significant volumes of sand that can range in consistancy from powdery to sandstone, though these creations invariably disappear after a few hours; she can form hard ridges at her fingertips for close-in combat; she can create a whirling, localized sandstorm effect that shields her from most incoming problems, and can be projected outward to protect others. In addition, Sandcaster has proven to be remarkably resilient to injury; her body seems to reactively form localized areas of sandstone-like toughness in response to impacts. It has been noted that Sandcaster's eyes can reshape themselves as quartz-like lenses for greatly enhanced vision in a wide range of spectra. Both reaction time and raw strength have been noted as well above human norms.
Taint: Sandcaster's outermost layer of skin is comprised of fine-grain sand; as such, it has a sandpaper like quality (which is only noticable when viewed closely or when touched). Her skin does, like anyone, continually shed flakes; with Sandcaster, the result is a residue of sand wherever she has been for any length of time.
History: Anne Marie Vincenne was a high-school science teacher in Long Island City. On summer vacation in Shoreham, she had the misfortune of being one of the few sunbathers on the beach nearby when the Shoreham Nuclear Power Facility suffered its famous containment breach of 2002 that resulted in a high-intensity dosing of the nearby beach. By her own description, Ms. Vincenne "melded" with the sand as she suffered a massive headache, and realized immediately that she had experienced a nova eruption.
Ms. Vincenne found that, when she attempted to return to her teaching position that fall, she faced opposition from a coalition of anti-nova parents and school staff; the school board caved to the pressure and dismissed her from her teaching duties. Anne Marie sued for reinstatement. The case wound it's way through the courts for two years, finally resulting in a precident-setting ruling by the New York Court of Appeals declaring novas to be protected by the equal protection clauses of that state's constitution; she was reinstated in her teaching position for the Fall 2004 semester, with back pay for the previous two years.
During her enforced absense, she was solicited by the city council for Long Island City to serve as a municipal defender; unable to find work in her field, she accepted, and took the moniker of Sandcaster for her activities. When she was reinstated, her initial impulse was to step down from her "hero job"; however, the city council repeatedly asked her to continue as a municipal defender. An apartment building fire in December of 2004, during which Sandcaster created sandstone columns that permitted evacuation of all occupants before the building could collapse, convinced her to continue her second job, and she proceeded to try to balance her two careers for the next decade.
In the wake of the "Ibiza Incident", a renewed call against novas took hold in many locales, and Long Island City was no exception. The city council, now comprised largely of conservatives elected in April of 2015, rescinded her mandate from the city. A renewed campaign for her removal from her teaching position took hold, and the school board made it clear that if she would not step down, reasons could be found to have her removed. In June of 2015, she resigned her teaching position and left Long Island City, with a forwarding address to a post office box in Chicago.
After a controversial stint with the Windy City Knights (during which she was Team Leader, briefly took the show off the air, came out of the closet, and joined the QNA), Sandcaster accepted a position as the municipal defender for Boise, Idaho, where she relocated with her partner, Stormwarden.
