Okay, seriously. Enough already. Tessa Barnes is really not the 3rd sexiest nova in business according to Forbes. She may be pretty but she is a nobody.

Making your character the sexiest nova in business is something that should've been voted on by the rest of us, because Kara would have beat her out hands down. She would have hit the list way the hell ahead of some nobody new eruptee. The top ten list is, like all others, a popularity contest. As an owner of her own business (and a very successful one) and being infinitely more famous, respected, and not to mention more popular Kara would have no doubt been on that list and certainly ahead of this new chick.

Those are my opinions. I could be wrong.

I agree. There are still canon novas out there. Novas shitloads more popular, more in the public eye and with way more cultural clout. And with novas popping up all over the world you have a much more global POV to deal with.

When I meant 'business', I meant the stuff covered by the Abilities of Bureaucracy and Biz, specifically finance and/or administrative positions. Kara is essentially a showbiz personality.

Canon-wise, there are what... Anna DeVries and Amanda Wu who are specifically mentioned as the only novas I can think of heavily involved in that area.

Tessa has App 5, Mega-App 1, Influence 4 - this is pretty damn big stuff.

Before I pull this out, I want a list of canon novas who would beat her, in my definition.

Alejandra? Raksasha (Bollywood Actress)? The ladies of Nippontai, Norway Novas, or the Aussie novas? London Fog? Houston Tornado? Narcosis?

Actually, bad examples. Alejandra's a singer, Raksasha's an actress, London Fog is a city defender. I don't know about Houston Tornado or Narcosis, but I don't recall either of them having extensive buisiness contacts they're publicly shown to be running.

Tessa's argument is, basically, that Forbes is running a very narrow criteria for their list. That's reasonably practical if, for instance, we're talking a list they put together for a particular article rather than, say, an annual list like the Forbes 500. Her examples are telling: a list that Anna DeVries heads is not going to have a lot of actresses or public figures on it, because she doesn't have Mega-Appearance at all and isn't known for her sexy image. If she's at the top, then Tessa (who sounds like a fairly prominent second-string figure in Utopia) would be a perfectly valid choice for third on the list.

In other words: Tessa IC is crowing up what is probably a tenth page article someone put together to add some human interest to the latest issue of Forbes. It's not like she made Time's Person of the Year.

That's my take, anyway.

No, she is not. Kara owns and operates her own very popular night club, handling all the managerial dudties. That's administration. By your own definition she would have qualified. Being a celebrity and a mage hot nova, doubly so.



So you picked something specific to only your character and gave yourself a spot in it.



Everyone has App 5, so she's nothing special. With out Almost Live her mega app wouldn't mean squat (which is why Wu and DeVries made the list I'm sure), and her influence is in Team Tomorrow, not Forbes.



So would I! You made it, you tell us. Show us a list of the other seven canon NPCs that made the list with her. Personally I think letting the board vote on the list would have made more sense than just placing yourself in a major publication as a relative nobody nova.

Also, I'm curious how Anna DeVries and Amanda Wu would take her saying the "Money Talks" as the came in first and second. That easily could be seen as a slap in the face and a rude way of being a sore loser.

Based on the canon portrait of Anna DeVries? She'd laugh. Not a woman with serious insecurity issues.

Less sure about Amanda Wu. That might be a good point to play off of.

Also, Gabriel: Here's a challenge. Why don't you find her seven canon NPCs for the list, since you're so hot to have them on there? Or maybe we all have something better to do than troll through the back-ends of Aberrant supplements looking for minor NPC's? Just a thought.

I was interested in your new character up until the point where she started veering off into, "Golly gee, everybody thinks I'm super-hawt!" territory, because reading about a glorified secretary for PU who's got giant clown-sized shoes to fill in the wake of Balm's death is infinitely more interesting to me than a glorified secretary for PU who just happens to have ALSO erupted into one of the (tee hee) sexiest women on the planet. That's retarded on so many fucking levels. Have you ever read 'Forbes' Magazine? I make 20K a year and even I know that Forbes wouldn't be caught dead putting a fucking porn star in their mag. If Ron Jeremy was the world's richest oil magnate, he'd still never make the page. Know why? BECAUSE HE'S A FUCKING PORN STAR AND IT'S MOTHERFUCKING FORBES FUCKING MAGAZINE.

Any list that includes "sexiest" as a qualifier is going to be FULL of bias and subjectivity, and a magazine like 'Forbes' isn't going to include anybody who might incense their target demo, that target demo being rich, old, white Republicans. When Dawn said "in business", I took it as a given that they were referring to women who specialized in the business community. Being a business woman on TOP of being something else doesn't make businesswoman your primary vocation, and running your own small business does not make you a power player in the annals of the business world. You are splitting fucking hairs and it's fucking petty. Because somebody called you out on a concept, you now feel the need to question everything another character does. Cut it the fuck out.



Like play Canon Cop?

Basically what this boils down to is that some people (me included) do have an issue (our problem, not yours but we are going to talk about it) when a player decides to puff up their character excessively.

Now, excessively is completely subjective so there are always going to be disagreements there but in my own never been humble opinion excessive would be when a reletively newly erupted nova is placed number 3 on a top ten list of a major magazine like Forbes. On the list? Not a problem. In the top three? A bit of a problem. To me, again this is about perception and when I'm talking I'm talking about MY perception.

But we are all going to have that issue. Why the fuck is Summer still in Utopia being the rampaging bitch that she is? The player has made his explanations and they fly with some, not with others. Why isn't Cyn locked up in some dank little cell? Well, it'd be a boring story if she was but some folks don't buy that she should still be wandering the earth as blatant and off the charts as she is. Would Long Pig even be ALLOWED to open a restraunt like his? I say yes give it's in Havana but others may disagree.

We're allowed to bitch and moan. Fuck, we're gamers, if we didn't bitch and moan I'm pretty sure we'd fucking die. Someone comes at you defend yourself. If you think they have a point THEN alter your shit. If you think they're simply being an overly picky assmunch and you notice they're in the minority then tell them to insert something large and spikey into an orifice of your choosing and continue with your story. Not everyone is going to like everything and we should all realize that and not be so sensitive.

I have no real problem with it. Seph pretty much nailed it as is.

If you -really- want to compromise than I am pretty sure most would be fine with a mention that she made the list without stating exactly where on the list she was.

And I would also point out to people that list was "sexiest" and not "Most beautiful". A bit of a difference there. I know people who are not stunningly beautiful and even downright average in the appearance department, but are sexy as hell. And like Seph said, you then have all the bias and subjectivity of Forbes slapped on top of it.

Frankly, I think we just need an OOC Rant thread for everyone to post and discuss their gripes. Rev and I could probably keep it going for a while, even without any other players putting their two cents in.

Okay once again the collective retardation has taken this as a full-blown attack against 'Tessa Barnes'. It wasn't. Tessa as a character has done nothing really but post eluai avatars of her, flirt with Liberteen, brag about how hot she is.

So far, and again these are my opinions, the character has yet to gain sufficient credibility of ended up on that list. Had she waited a month, maybe, two? Most definitely I could see it then. But her node isn't fully sprouted from the lobe and already she is able to compete with established business powerhouses.

This has nothing to do with rules. I Tessa brought statistics into it not me. I don't recall there being a "How to make the Forbes Top 10 Roll" in the book. This was never about dice, rules, books, canon, non-canon, or how many dots were in what.

It was about pure character credibility. Something that, in my opinion, the character had yet to establish. No fictions, not even news broadcast posts or two that described her as even being in the running for a list like that. We got nothing.

So, that's it, I'm done. No more to say about the matter.

Tessa, I'm sorry you percieved this as an attack, it wasn't. Were it an actuall attack it would have involved much more cursing and name calling I assure you.
